Gavin and Stacey’s Melanie Walters looks almost unrecognisable after VERY glam transformation

She’s famed for portraying Stacey’s mum, omelette-loving Gwen West, in hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey.

But Melanie Walters looked almost unrecognisable as she underwent a very glamorous transformation for her new panto role.

The actress, 59, ditched her loveable character’s understated outfits and auburn curls and instead opted for sleek tresses and rich make-up for her roll as Fairy Bon Bon in the Beauty and the Beast at the Floral Pavilion Theatre in New Brighton, Wirral.

Sharing a glamorous video of herself to Twitter on Christmas Eve, the TV personality also looked amazing as she donned fluffy pink fairy wings, an elaborate matching headband and dazzling pink jewellery.

Before  the clip then played with the actress adding a cheerful: ‘Merry Christmas!’ as she waved to the camera.

With another supportive follower adding: ‘Brilliant actress. Great show.’

Melanie played housewife Gwen for all three series of the BBC series and also returned for the Christmas special in 2019.

Last year, she revealed how she has fans come up to her and ask her to make an omelette in reference to her character who often offers to whip up an egg-based treat for her loved ones.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s usually a tap on the shoulder and “Make us an omelette!” and they fall about laughing and then I do too because they do it out of enjoyment.

‘I’m a bit wary if I’m in a pub and people get really drunk because they see me and say, “Oooh, it’s Gwen!” They seem to think they can pick me up and take me home because I’m so small. I’m not remotely as sweet as Gwen in real life so they get a shock!’

The star added that she doesn’t really ‘cook anything’ and that the art department were the ones to really rustle up the omelettes on the show.

She added: ‘When we were filming, the art department cooked thousands of omelettes for me, bless them! They set them up one after another so when you see me turning one over and putting omelettes on people’s plates on screen, that’s been prepared by the art guys.’

Meanwhile, Joanna Page, who played Stacey, recently told how the stars of the series are eager to return for more, following the success of the 2019 Christmas special.

She told The Sun’s TV Mag: ‘I think we all would, the whole of the cast would, because it’s such a joy to film and purely and selfishly just having a laugh together.

‘But then obviously I think we were all like, “oh my gosh, what does Smithy say? Does he say yes? Does he say no” And you can see that they would write it brilliantly either way.

‘I’d love to know what he says but I don’t have a clue. If they sent me a script now, I would not have a clue which way they would go.’

Elsewhere, James Corden previously revealed there are currently no plans for another Gavin and Stacey special but he thinks it would be a ‘shame’ to never do another show again.

The actor, 43, co-wrote the hugely popular series with Ruth Jones and the pair have yet to sit down and hash out a potential future special.

Appearing on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 in May, James acknowledged the end of the Christmas Special in 2019, where Nessa (Ruth) proposes to Smithy (James), was ‘so open-ended’.

Asked if fans can expect another episode, he said: ‘As it stands right now, there aren’t any plans to do one but that’s not to say there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one.

‘When we wrote that last special, we never really thought whether we’d make another one after it but then that special, it’s so open-ended.’

However, James added that he and co-creator Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, both feel the Christmas special felt like the end of a chapter, rather than the whole story.

He said: ‘I think it would be a shame to leave it there. I think, that’s certainly my feeling and I think Ruth feels the same.

‘It doesn’t feel like the end of a book, it feels like the end of a chapter. I do feel like if we did another one, that would be the end of it.

He added: ‘We finished it before we called the BBC because we didn’t want to let everybody down.

‘My hunch is no one will know it’s coming until it’s ready but we haven’t had a single conversation about it.

‘You’ve got to wait for these ideas to arrive. We also can’t write separately, we’re terrible at it.

‘It feels sometimes like we open a portal and it’s all these characters in Barry Island and slowly these ideas present themselves to us.’
