Two people are dead and 12 injured after a gunman opened fire at a college party in Texas on Saturday.

Authorities have yet to determine the identity of the suspect and are still actively looking for him, as well as the weapon, said Hunt County sheriff Randy Meeks.

Meeks said it is believed the shooter may have been targeting one individual at the Halloween and homecoming off-campus Texas A&M University-Commerce party, which was attended by about 750 people.

The shooting took place at about midnight Saturday. Meeks said authorities believe one male shooter wearing a blue hoodie entered the venue through the back door and opened fire with a handgun.

He said the scene was in “complete chaos” after the shots rang out as hundreds of people ran in panic.

Halloween masks and other debris could still be seen outside the venue on Sunday, and pools of blood were visible on the ground.

Meeks confirmed the two people killed in the shooting were both males, but he was unable to confirm whether they were A&M-Commerce students.

Of the 12 injured people, six were trampled or hurt and six were injured by the gunfire, said Sgt. Jeff Haines. Four are in critical condition, one was in good condition as of Sunday afternoon and the condition of the sixth person is unknown.

It was first thought that 14 people had been injured but authorities have since revised that number.

The university has made counselling services available to all students following the incident.
