A friend of Cullum rescued the two by diving into the water, breaking one of the car’s windows and pulling them free from the partially submerged car, according to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
Cullum, her daughter and the man that saved them were not injured.
Shelton praised the heroic man, saying: ‘The man that put his own life at risk to save these two people is a hero. We would never tell anyone to take such actions, but he did what he had to do.’
‘I am convinced the outcome would have been much worse without his life-saving work. We don’t identify persons in this type of case, but he is a hero for sure.’
The suspect was arrested by officers and charged on Monday.
