Testing Shows Borderlands 3’s FL4K And Moze Nerfs Are Either Bad Or Pointless

Borderlands 3 has been updating itself with new patches and hotfixes, but unfortunately, the way things are going, it seems like Gearbox is more preoccupied with nerfing powerful builds and farming methods than they are buffing bad things or fixing technical problems.

The most recent hotfix was the last straw for a lot of players, and after testing some of the changes, I too am kind of wondering what exactly Gearbox is doing with these recent changes.

Players have been waiting for FL4K’s pets to get buffed in order to be remotely viable for damage and survivability in the endgame, instead what we got was a small buff to Rakk Attack where it now always applies a status effect, but it’s really not a huge change.

Instead, the main change to FL4K was a nerf to his “return ammo on crit” Leave No Trace perk, which further nerfs his crit boss burn build that was already nerfed once before, seeing its damage and duration reduced. This new change really, really hurts though, as there is now a two second cooldown on when ammo can be returned to the magazine on crit. Two seconds is enough to burn through the clips of most guns, so really, that means that you’re only getting an extra shot or two at most.

I have tested this with a number of guns with FL4K and the perk is now essentially destroyed. I went from being able to take Graveward to half health or below on one Lyuda burst to getting maybe through 1/6th of his health bar because of the change forcing me to reload way, way earlier. This change has essentially made the perk useless on any weapon brand that isn’t Jakobs, which naturally returns bullets to the magazine on crit on its own. It’s frustrating, especially when this change wasn’t paired with any equivalent buffs.

Meanwhile, I went and tested the new Moze nerfs, that there’s now a cooldown on when a grenade can be refunded to you, in order to prevent “infinite grenades.” Here’s what the hotfix notes said:

“Infinite Grenades is not an intentional build for Moze—even if it is hilarious. To lower the power (and spam) of this build, a re-trigger delay has been added to the grenade portion of Means of Destruction.”

Except…did anyone test this? Unlike the FL4K nerfs which go way too far, this Moze nerf does nothing but force players to use one type of grenades, ones that split into multiple copies, because this change doesn’t affect that at all. I have my multiple splitter Storm Front grenades and I tested this hotfix by endlessly spamming grenades in Mayhem 3 Proving Grounds and I found…no change at all to the ability to constantly regen grenades, even if it was happening a tiny bit slower than before. I still never ran out, never stopped healing myself. All this did is reduce the effectiveness of the park on other types of grenades, cementing the fact that players need to use the same grenades they’ve already been using. This says to me that Gearbox doesn’t really even understand the build they’re trying to nerf (not that they should nerf it).

All of this is frustrating because so many other clear problems remain, like Zane being in dire need of huge buffs and fixes to his skills, or Moze and FL4K getting buffs to their mech and pets respectively. And then there are immortal Anointed to deal with, and remaining tech problems like menu lag on console. And at this point it’s still clear that Gearbox went too far with the Mayhem loot nerf. Boss loot may be where it needs to be, but wild drops are way, way too low, which makes boss spam grinding the only thing really worth doing in the game right now.

It’s frustrating that these ham-handed nerfs are the biggest changes to the game so far when there are so many other pressing issues at play. I know Gearbox is continuing to work on this stuff, but the “fixes” they’re getting out first here are kind of aggravating and dispiriting.
