Pret A Manger is launching vegan versions of its most popular sandwiches, it has been revealed.

The popular coffee chain has announced the new range in response to growing demand from customers for more meat-free options – and have just opened their fifth ‘Veggie Pret.’

The first meat-free restaurant was opened in September 2016 in east London and the brand has since opened two more shops in London and one in Manchester.

Pret’s Global Head of Food Innovation, Hannah Dolan, said: ‘Veggie Pret is a space where we’ve had a great opportunity to experiment with vegan and veggie food.

‘It’s our mission to make it easier for customers to eat less meat, so we challenged ourselves to recreate the delicious flavours and textures of our meaty bestsellers, using only vegan ingredients.

She added: ‘We’re excited for everyone, (vegans and non-vegans alike), to try The Vegan Classics – and to see if they can tell the difference between the new vegan recipes and the originals!’

The Vegan Classics will go on sale in Veggie Pret shops in the coming weeks and will move into the mainstream shops if successful.

Taking to Instagram, they asked customers for their preferences and penned: ‘Our chefs are busy developing vegan versions of our classic sandwiches, wraps and baguettes exclusively for Veggie Pret. Tell us below which recipes you’d like to see ‘veganised.”‘

In response, many customers were in agreement that they wanted vegan versions of croissants or of a ploughman’s sandwich.

‘Vegan pastries!! How do you not have these yet? Vegan croissants!’ one person wrote, while a second penned: ‘Bring back the salad box with the falafel, hummus, butternut squash, tapenade and lemony dressing !!! Best salad ever.’

A third penned: ‘Vegan sausage sandwich or something like that would be great,’ while a fourth commented: ‘Veggie New Yorker would be a great vegan one for those of us lot cutting back on dairy.’

A fifth stated: ‘Mac and cheese, and falafel and halloumi would be amazing as then my dairy allergy daughter could eat something yummy too.’

It comes after popular mock-meat chain Quorn revealed they are launching a sandwich line and Gregg’s announced it was launching vegan versions of all its popular dishes, following the huge success of the vegan sausage roll.
