Alan Shearer is predicting Manchester United will finish fourth in the Premier League this season.
United finished third last term but the former Newcastle forward expects Chelsea to leapfrog them this time around following a number of high-profile purchases in the transfer window.
Chelsea have signed Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva, while United’s only addition to their senior squad is the Dutchman Donny van de Beek. Dean Henderson has returned from a season-long loan at Sheffield United to provide competition to David de Gea in goal.
“United will be looking up the table after their great run to finish third, but bettering that finish is going to be extremely hard for them as things stand,” Shearer said.
“I’m not sure they (United) have the depth to sustain a challenge, although I’m expecting one or two more signings to go with Donny van de Beek and if Jadon Sancho is one of them I could understand if their fans started getting excited.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United made waves with the high-profile signing of Dutch wonder Donny van de Beek – and a lot is expected of him at Old Trafford.

“United are going to be good to watch even if they don’t get Sancho, but I am really interested to see how their goalkeeping situation plays out because we could see a real battle to be number one between David de Gea and Dean Henderson.”
Shearer added: “I have gone with Manchester City to be champions this time, but it is very hard to make predictions now about what will happen as the transfer window does not close until 5 October.
“If anyone needs any evidence of what a huge difference a signing or two can make, they need look no further than Bruno Fernandes at United.”
