American Pie gets a spinoff at Netflix with females in the lead roles

The raunchy humor that made American Pie a sensation will be back for another round in American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules.

A new trailer released Wednesday shows the teen comedy flipping the script by focusing on a group of high school girls looking to charge up their romantic lives as they start their senior year.

The film, which will premiere on Netflix shortly after its October 6 digital and disc premiere, is the first entry in the American Pie franchise since 2009’s American Pie Presents: The Book Of Love.

Back at it: The American Pie series will continue with American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules, which releases on DVD, VOD and digital platforms on October 6

Girls’ Rules also stars Darren Barnett, who appears on Netflix’s popular Never Have I Ever series, as one of their girls’ ideal suitors, while The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Barry Bostwick is featured.

The film doesn’t appear to have much direct reference to the original American Pie series, aside from being set at the same high school and sharing a similar tone.

The original 1999 film, which starred Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne and others, was a massive box office hit that grossed $235.5 million against a paltry $11 million budget.

It’s three sequels did nearly as well, though the critical reception dipped over time.

An American Pie 5 film was announced back in 2012, but so far the sequel hasn’t materialized.

The franchise also continued with four poorly reviewed direct-to-DVD spin-off films.

Girls’ Rules will be released on disc and for digital rental and purchase starting October 6, and a Netflix release will follow shortly, though a date hasn’t yet been announced.
