Marcus Rashford demonstrated his expertise from set-pieces with an incredible free-kick strike against Chelsea on Wednesday and his effort was so good it left his forward partner Anthony Martial stunned into disbelief.

The 22-year-old was on hand to put United in front at Stamford Bridge via the penalty spot after Daniel James had been fouled and he then netted the winner with an unstoppable free-kick from distance after Michy Batshuayi had levelled the scoreline.

Rashford’s exploits meant that Manchester United reached the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Chelsea’s expense and up next for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in the competition is a home tie against League Two Colchester United.

All the talk after the game was about the quality of Rashford’s winning goal with Victor Lindelof, among others, comparing the England international’s free-kick to Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic goal for United against Portsmouth in 2008.

After the ball whistled past Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero and nestled into the top corner of the net, Martial stopped in his tracks before turning around and staring at his teammate in shock at what he had just done.

Martial wasn’t the only United player who struggled to comprehend the strike, though, as young left-back Brandon Williams put his hands on his head with incredulity at the goal before running off to celebrate with him, while Daniel James did likewise.

Solskjaer was understandably delighted with Rashford’s goal, saying after the game: ‘It’s very Cristiano-like, isn’t it?’

‘The boy has got nerves of steel, takes a penalty, no problem. Steps up and hits the ball like he does and wins us the game – fantastic.’

Rashford’s form has been called into question at times this season, but he seems to have rediscovered his goalscoring touch of late, scoring five goals in his last five appearances for club and country.

Both Martial and Rashford caught the eye during United’s 3-1 victory over Norwich City on Sunday and they will be hoping to carry their good form into Saturday’s game against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
