Danny Drinkwater is returning to Chelsea after ending his loan spell at Burnley early.

Aston Villa have been linked with the midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2017 after winning the Premier League title with the Foxes.

According to reports in the national press, Drinkwater fits the bill for Villa as cover for John McGinn who is likely to be sidelined until March with a fractured ankle.

His loan spell at Burnley was due to last until January 6 – and manager Sean Dyche was willing to extend it – but the Sun reports the 29-year-old is back at Chelsea and eyeing a new move to reignite his career.

Drinkwater managed just one Premier League appearance for the Clarets after joining them in August having struggled to break into Dyche’s plans.

Chelsea are ready to send him out on loan again and Villa could hold an advantage over other potential suitors because of John Terry’s relationship with Stamford Bridge boss Frank Lampard.

Villa are also scouring the transfer market for a new striker after Wesley Moraes was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Wesley was withdrawn during the 2-1 win against Burnley on New Year’s Day and it has been confirmed the 22-year-old has suffered knee ligament damage.
