Trainer Bob Baffert secured a record-equalling sixth Kentucky Derby success as Authentic held off odds-on favourite Tiz The Law at Churchill Downs.

Trainer of Triple Crown heroes American Pharoah and Justify, Baffert saved the majority of the credit for jockey John Velazquez after a positive early-race move took Authentic to the head of the 15-runner field.

“I’ve been fortunate to have great jockeys win races for me before and this was won by John,” Baffert said. “The way he handled the race was perfect.

“Authentic is a speed horse and John kept enough for the finish. John has had some rocking-chair wins in the past but he earned this one that’s for sure.

“Winning this race never gets old. We’re all very fortunate and blessed to be in this position.”

Baffert did confess to mixed emotions after long-time assistant Jimmy Sparks broke his arm attempting to saddle the trainer’s other Derby runner, Thousand Stars, who was withdrawn.

The trainer said: “Jimmy, poor guy, is in an ambulance right now and can’t enjoy it. This is so emotional, the ups and downs in this game. Unbelievable.”

Authentic faced questions about his staying prowess heading into the race after only just getting home in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in July.

But those doubts were disproved as he strode out to extend his lead in the final two furlongs and win by a length and a quarter.

Velazquez, who was celebrating his third Derby win, said: “That’s all you ask from a horse, that when you get after them they give you everything they can, and he did.

“Every time I asked him for more he gave more. And what a feeling, what a feeling I had. I don’t want to take the credit because Bob had this horse completely ready for today.”

Belmont and Travers Stakes scorer Tiz The Law was the odds-on favourite and looked ready to strike coming off the home bend, but found little for pressure under Manuel Franco.

Trainer Barclay Tagg summed up the outcome succinctly: “He didn’t win it. Baffert’s hard to beat.”
