Bake Off 2020: Where is Sandi Toksvig and why did she leave the show?

The Great British Bake Off has returned to screens after filming was almost thrown into jepordy.

Viewers of the popular Channel 4 show were almost left without their annual soggy bottom and showpiece fix this year as the show would usually start in August and run on Tuesday nights until the final in October.

But, although slightly delayed, it is back from Tuesday (September 22) after bosses promised that it will be no different to the series we know and love.

And Bake Off fans will notice a significant change to the line-up.

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood will be back as usual when the series returns at 8pm.

But, following Sandi Toksvig’s decision to quit the show following the 2019 series, Noel Fielding will return as host and be joined by the show’s brand new addition, Matt Lucas.

The broadcaster decided to step down from her role as co-host of the show after three years at the helm.

In January, when she announced the news, Sandi said she instead planned to focus on other work projects, which include hosting the forthcoming series of The Write Offs, which looks at the issue of adult literacy.

The new Bake Off line-up

Sandi said: “When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family.

“Unusually I am departing from the Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work.”

She also said: “As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.

“Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television.

“Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel.

“The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves.

“I wish everyone well.”

Matt Lucas was announced in her place back in March.

The Little Britain comic said: “I’m chuffed to bits to be joining the most delicious show on television. I can’t wait to break bread with Noel, Prue and Paul and meet the brilliant bakers.

“And bearing in mind my love of cake, I’ve already ordered some much larger trousers in anticipation. See you in the tent.”
