Brexit news: Jo Swinson confronted on ‘undermining’ Boris in meeting with Verhofstadt | UK | News

The arch-Remainer flew to Brussels with Lib Dems Brexit spokesman Tom Brake to meet with europhile Guy Verhofstadt on Wednesday. But in an interview with Channel 4 News’ Paul McNamara, the Lib Dem leader was confronted on her decision to undermine the Prime Minister. Mr McNamara said: “The Government is trying to negotiate a deal. You’re undermining that by being here, aren’t you?”

Ms Swinson defended herself by claiming Boris Johnson had no intention to negotiate a deal with the Brussels bloc.

She said: “The Government isn’t seriously trying to negotiate.

“It’s very clear that they are putting forward plans that are unworkable or they are insulting of the European leaders.

“That’s not the action of a government that is serious about negotiating.”

Her meeting with the Belgian MEP came ahead of his outburst in the European Parliament in which he branded Boris Johnson “the real traitor”.

Mr Verhofstadt claimed the Prime Minister has attempted to blame everyone for his failure to deliver Brexit.

He accused Mr Johnson of calling his opponents “traitors”, adding that the only person not under fire is the Prime Minister himself.

Speaking in the European Parliament, Mr Verhofstadt said: “It is a blame game against everybody – against the Union, against Ireland, against Mrs Merkel, against British judiciary, against Labour, against the Liberal Democrats, even against Mrs May.

He said the Prime Minister had tabled “virtual proposals”, explaining that he doesn’t see them as a real offer by the Government.

The Belgian MEP said: “I think that the proposal that Boris Johnson one week ago put forward was not serious at all.

“I call it a virtual proposal, not a real proposal. It gives a veto to the DUP.

“It puts customs facilities not on the border of the Irish republic but all the other parts.

“It makes a sort of Singapore on the North Sea…but by in fact destroying ecological, social and environmental standards.”
