Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool: Premier League, as it happened

Chelsea vs Liverpool – LIVE!

Sadio Mane scored twice as Liverpool exploited Chelsea’s frailties to win 2-0 on Sunday, a second successive triumph at the start of the Premier League title defence.

A tepid game swung in Liverpool’s favour after Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen was sent off at the end of the first half for hauling down Mane.

And as the champions pressed immediately after the break, Mane took five minutes to head in the opener after an interchange between Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Yet another blunder by Kepa Arrizabalaga gifted Liverpool a second. The Chelsea goalkeeper stopped Fikayo Tomori’s back pass before trying to clear to Jorginho. But it was easily intercepted by Mane to slot into the net.

Chelsea did gain an unexpected chance to stage a comeback when Thiago Alcantara on his Liverpool debut brought down Timo Werner but Jorginho’s penalty was saved by Alisson.

FULL-TIME | Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool |

90+2 mins: That is a decent save. Mane fancies a hat-trick and his long-range strike tase a deflection of Tomori that sends it towards the bottom corner but Kepa reacts sharply to palm round the post.

90 mins: Three minutes to be added on…

86 mins: Final change for Liverpool – Takumi Minamino is on for Roberto Firmino.

85 mins: Alisson’s had an excellent afternoon given he’s had almost nothing to do. Tammy Abraham curls towards the bottom corner and the goalkeeper makes another one-handed save to keep it out.

82 mins: Not far away from a debut goal from Thiago, who drags his effort a couple of yards wide from just outside the box.

79 mins: A double change for Chelsea – Jorginho and Matteo Kovacic are off, Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley are on.

Thiago Alcantara has oozed class since replacing Jordan Henderson at half-time but that was a remarkably clumsy challenge to hand Chelsea a way back into the match that they had not deserved.

Thankfully for the Liverpool new boy, there is a top-class stopper between the sticks capable of digging him out of trouble. That’s a top save.

75 mins: Penalty saved!

Terrific from Alisson, Jorginho skips, jumps, but the ‘keeper stands his ground and makes a low save.

73 mins: Penalty to Chelsea!

Out of nothing, Chelsea have a way back in. Timo Werner drives across the box and Thiago clumsily clips his heels and brings him down.

Chelsea would probably end this game now if the referee offered it to them. Liverpool are running Frank Lampard’s side absolutely ragged, making use of their numerical advantage in possession and hunting the ball aggressively whenever they don’t have it. You can never rule it out but it’s hard to see a way back for the hosts.

68 mins: Decent effort from Mason Mount, a dipping effort from 25 yards but it doesn’t come down quite enough for him.

66 mins: Decent stop. More good play from Firmino and Wijnaldum is slipped in but from a tight angle he can do little more than fire straight at Kepa, which, in fairness, isn’t alway a bad idea.

64 mins: James Milner is going to enter the fray, with Naby Keita the man to make way.

61 mins: Liverpool are enjoying themselves and with half-an-hour left this could get ugly. Mo Salah’s latest effort is blocked behind by Tomori.

Jack Rosser is at Stamford Bridge

Any slim hope Chelsea had of holding Liverpool at bay and picking them off with Werner on the break has been completely extinguished early on here. The two areas they haven’t invested in yet have hurt them in their first real test this season.

Their signings have been so impressive and will, no doubt, drive them onto greater things. But everyone knew they needed a centre half at the start of the window, and Kepa’s position is looking increasingly untenable.

GOAL! | Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool | Sadio Mane 54′

Oh, Kepa.

It’s a howler, an absolute clanger, and Liverpool are two up. Credit Sadio Mane, who gives the ball away and then hares after it to try and win it back, pressing the goalkeeper. Still, he should do better than kicking it straight at him, and Mane steers home.

Didn’t take long! It’s a terrific goal, too, sharp one-two between Salah and Firmino to get the latter in down the right and he hangs a cross up to the back post, where Mane darts across the front of James and heads powerfully into the far corner.

46 mins: The word from the Liverpool camp is that Jordan Henderson has a tight groin.
