Chelsea 2-0 Brighton City result, Premier League 2019/20 match report

Goals from Jorginho and Willian helped Chelsea to a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

The hosts were dominant for much of the afternoon, but failed to take advantage, needing Jorgingo’s penalty to open the scoring, before Willian’s deflected effort finally sealed all three points late on.

Frank Lampard was without French midfielder N’Golo Kante, but welcomed Andreas Christensen back into defence, with Ross Barkley asked to play a deeper midfield role alongside Jorginho.

The Blues started well and came close to opening the scoring midway through the first half when Tammy Abraham got the faintest of touches onto Barkley’s free-kick delivery but could only glance onto the far post.

Kepa Arrizabalaga had to be alert to deny Neal Maupay on his return to west London after his summer move from Brentford, while Barkley blew a golden chance to give the home side the lead after a terrific cross from Marcos Alonso.

The breakthrough came shortly after half-time, when Adam Webster felled Mason Mount and Jorginho resumed spot-kick duties to slot home.

Ryan denied Tammy Abraham from close range on the hour mark after an awful backpass from Lewis Dunk, before Dan Burn came within inches of levelling, heading into the ground and off the crossbar at the other end.

But Burn was soon even more unfortunate, as Willian’s strike deflected off him and past Ryan to seal the result.

FULL TIME | Chelsea 2-0 Brighton |

87 mins: Unsurprisingly, that second goal has taken the wind out of Brighton’s sail just as they were really starting to pile on the pressure.

GOAL! | Chelsea 2-0 Brighton | Willian 76′

Job done! Hudson-Odoi carries it deep into the Brighton half and feeds Willian, whose strike takes a wicked deflection off Burn and beats Ryan.

73 mins: How’s this not gone in?! Dan Burn gets up best to meet the corner, does everything right, heads down into the ground, but back up onto the crossbar.

71 mins: Matteo Kovacic and Callum Hudson-Odoi are on as Chelsea look to seal the game.

61 mins: Should have been game over. Tammy Abraham takes advantage of some lax defending to nip in, but the angle is closed by Ryan and he can’t find a way past him.

There was a debate against Valencia in the Champions League about who should be taking Chelsea’s penalties – and it intensified after when Ross Barkley missed his spot kick.

However, Jorginho made no mistake just then and showed why he should be on penalties. Cool as you like.

GOAL! | Chelsea 1-0 Brighton | Jorginho 50′

A horrible mistake from Webster, who loses out to Mount and then brings him down.

Jorginho takes over spot-kick duties, and slots home.

49 mins: Penalty to Chelsea!

That first-half can be summed up by the fact Chelsea had 17 shots and Brighton 0. The Blues should be ahead and need to be more clinical. Michy Batshuayi and Christian Pulisic are both on the bench…

We are back underway…

HALF TIME | Chelsea 0-0 Brighton |

Simon Collings is at Stamford Bridge

Brighton have finally started to come into this match and it is a man who is know around West London, Neal Maupay, causing the problems.

The Frenchman was lethal for Brentford in the Championship and he has been Brighton’s biggest threat going forward today. He was clean through moments ago but Kepa got down well to stop him.

36 mins: Oh what a chance!

Ross Barkley should have given Chelsea the lead! A peach of a cross to the backpost from Alonso, where Barkley steals in, but he sidefoots tamely at Ryan.

33 mins: Terrific goalkeeping!

It looks a superb ball in behind for Maupay, but Kepa is off his line brilliantly to deny him.

Moments later, Alzate goes into the book for a dive that leaves Azpilicueta furious.

25 mins: Brighton have just started to gain a bit of a foothold after Chelsea’s dominant start. We’ve seen this ground grow nervy as games go on this season.

This is still all Chelsea and they could have easily taken the lead, but Abraham could only direct his header onto the post. The only thing Chelsea need to be worried about is being caught out at the back.

Brighton centre-back Adam Webster was somehow able to carry the ball 50 yards unchallenged earlier and the visitors are looking to hit the Blues on the break.

14 mins: Off the post!

It’s Barkley who bends in a cracking free-kick, and I’m not even sure whether Abraham gets anything on it, but it has left Mat Ryan with no chance as it clips off the far post.

12 mins: Willian jinks inside and it opens up nicely for him to bend one towards the top corner, but he slings it into the Shed.

It’s been a very good start from Chelsea, who as always under Lampard are trying to get the ball down and play.

Mount has been particularly lively, popping up in those pockets of space just off Tammy Abraham. The pattern has been set, with Brighton sitting deep and Chelsea dominating possession.
