James, 21, has adapted quickly to life in the Premier League following a move from Championship club Swansea City last summer.

He scored on his debut, a 4-0 victory against Chelsea at Old Trafford in August. His early form has seen him lauded by supporters, pundits and coaches alike.

Despite joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men during the summer transfer window, James was pictured in Leeds United’s fly on the wall Amazon Prime documentary ‘Take Us Home’. He was a January window target for City’s then Championship promotion rivals but the move fell through.

James has scored three goals in nine games for the Red Devils, and will be hoping to add to his tally as Solskjaer’s men travel to Carrow Road this Sunday.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Manchester United, Farke made the admission that James is a player he would have liked to sign at City.

“If I’m honest, he’s a player I’ve always liked and I tried to see if there was a chance to work with him but sadly when Manchester United call, there is no chance for Norwich City to get the player.”

City boss Farke is the latest to commend the form of the Welsh winger, stating that his rise to become one of United’s crucial players isn’t a shock.

“I was not surprised because I was aware of his potential. Everyone has to pay a lot of respect to him because to deliver that quick on this level and to become a key player this early says a lot about his character.”
