The first conference game of the season finds the Orange in Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels. North Carolina is a popular pick to win the ACC Coastal with sophomore Sam Howell leading a potent offense. Syracuse has a golden opportunity to show that last season’s 5-7 record was a fluke by pulling off the road upset.
The Red Wolves fell to Memphis last Saturday 37-24 as the defense gave up more than 200 yards both rushing and passing. The Wildcats typically get it done on the ground behind dual-threat quarterback Skylar Thompson.
The Ragin’ Cajuns are Athlon Sports’ pick to win the Sun Belt and could make things tough on the Big 12’s Cyclones at home. Iowa State is led by dual-threat quarterback Brock Purdy but the defense shouldn’t be overlooked, especially if lineman JaQuan Bailey returns to form in his return from injury.
This is an intriguing in-state matchup of Group of 5 teams from North Carolina. The Mountaineers are the defending Sun Belt champions and return several key pieces from that team, including quarterback Zac Thomas. The 49ers are a program on the rise under head coach Will Healy and are looking for some payback after last season’s 56-41 loss.
The Fighting Irish embark on their first (and probably only) season as a member of the ACC at home against the Blue Devils. Ian Book leads the way on offense and a talented, yet relatively inexperienced defense will go up against a Duke offense led by new quarterback Chase Brice, a transfer from Clemson.
The Mike Norvell era for the Seminoles gets underway at home against a Yellow Jackets team still finding its identity under second-year head coach Geoff Collins. Talent has never been a problem for FSU, but it’s up to Norvell to put all of the pieces together and get the most out of his roster. With a year in the new systems under their belts, the Jackets are hoping to take a step forward after going 3-9 in Collins’ debut.
The Tigers’ quest for a sixth straight College Football Playoff appearance begins in Winston-Salem against the Demon Deacons. Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne highlight the offense while coordinator Brent Venables is looking to reload on defense yet again. Wake Forest has been a tough out under head coach Dave Clawson, but the Deacons return just two starters on offense and the defense will certainly be tested by Lawrence and an assortment of explosive playmakers.
