Coronation Street and Emmerdale star Rodney Litchfield dies, aged 81

TV veteran and soap actor Rodney Litchfield has died at the age of 81, after a long illness.

Rodney had roles in both Coronation Street (as Wilf Morton) and Emmerdale, as well as parts in Shameless, Heartbeat, A Touch of Frost, Casualty, Doctors and as Old Tommy on BBC sitcom Early Doors.

His passing was confirmed on Twitter by Early Doors writer Phil Mealey. “Really sad news that Rodney Litchfield aka Old Tommy passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday aged 81, having been poorly for some time,” he shared.

“We were blessed to meet and cast him as he was absolutely perfect. To you Rodders and To The Regiment it won’t be the same without you. RIPx.”

His Corrie character Wilf was the grandfather of Jodie Morton (Samantha Seager), and was an ambitious wheeler dealer with a mischievous side. He once falsely reported his death to a newspaper by submitting his own obituary, and had a flirtatious relationship with Blanche Hunt.

Michael Starke – who played Jerry Morton, Wilf’s son, on the soap – has also taken to Twitter to pay his respects.
