It sounds like Dakota Johnson may join the Marvel Cinematic Universe some time soon. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but a couple of outlets published reports today citing insiders who say she’s been tentatively cast in an upcoming lead role.

According to those reports — from publications like Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety — Dakota was recently tapped to play the titular character in Sony’s first contemporary Marvel film starring a woman superhero.

The project would also mark a notable first for the 50 Shades of Grey actor, whose performance opposite Olivia Colman in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter is currently receiving praise, being that she isn’t known for her work in sci-fi movies or TV shows.

If casting conversations unfold as expected, Dakota’s MCU debut will reportedly feature her as Madame Web, a mutant with clairvoyant powers who is often featured in Spider-Man comics. This would be the first live-action version of the character. She previously appeared in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Of course we’ve seen women headline popular superhero films before, like Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Both franchises were born out of collaborations between Marvel Studios and Walt Disney.

But Sony’s standalone Madame Web film would be the distributor’s initial foray into woman-fronted Marvel adaptation. News of Dakota’s reported involvement trails the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was distributed by Sony Pictures.
