Chelsea fans were given a scare when Dutch club Heracles Almelo jokingly ‘announced’ Kai Havertz’s signing on Tuesday morning following Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz’s comments last night.

The west London club have been working on a deal to sign Havertz for several months, with Leverkusen’s Europa League exit at the hands of Inter paving the way for the 21-year-old to complete a transfer worth in excess of £75million.

Speculation about the move has swirled for some time and Bosz was clearly fed up of having to bat away the rumours surrounding his star man – particularly after losing to Inter.

Once again asked about Havertz’s future on Monday night at his post-match press conference, the Dutch coach joked: ‘Yes, I can exclusively announce he’ll play for Heracles Almelo.’

The following morning, the Eredivisie side had some fun with their old manager Bosz’s remarks and tweeted ‘Welkom Kai’ alongside a photoshopped picture of the German in a Heracles kit and the hashtag #AnnounceHavertz.

It did not take long for Chelsea fans to spot the tweet and most weren’t too happy, with some even taking it literally and fearing the Leverkusen star had actually opted for a move to Almelo.

Given that Heracles’ record transfer is just £700,000, Chelsea probably don’t have to worry about the Dutch side making a rival bid for Havertz, with Leverkusen hoping to get as much as £90m for the youngster.

Chelsea still hope to reach a compromise over that fee, though Leverkusen have been adamant that any club who wants to sign the attacking midfielder will need to stump up their asking price in full.

Asked if Leverkusen have agreed to sell Havertz, sporting director Rudi Voller told Gazzetta dello Sport recently: ‘No, but with his talent, it means he’s on the list of all the best clubs.

‘We know of the interest of a couple of clubs, especially Chelsea, but for us, the situation is quite simple: he has a two-year contract.

‘If anyone wants him on our terms, fine, otherwise he stays here another year and we are happy. It won’t be easy, but for an artist like him there is no Covid discount.’
