John Mayer breaks his silence on ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson's memoir during WWHL appearance

His ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson said in her memoir Open Book that a therapist once suggested that John Mayer ‘probably never loved her’ and was just ‘obsessed with her.’

And during his appearance on Watch What Happens Live, John was asked by host Andy Cohen during the segment Never Have I Ever about the book.

John, 42, said: ‘I’ve heard about it.  I heard some things.’

Adding: ‘But as Pee Wee Herman says in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure before the movie of his life is about to play out at the end, he’s not watching the movie and the reason he’s not watching the movie, he says, “I don’t have to watch it Dottie, I lived it.” And I think that’s prescient here.’

The stars had a turbulent relationship from 2006 until they split 2007, which Jessica had said in the memoir was one of the factors that led her to an addiction to alcohol and pills.

Jessica had recalled in the memoir, which as released February 4, that after just a few months of dating, John repeatedly told her how ‘obsessed’ he was with her, ‘sexually and emotionally.’

After her divorce from Nick Lachey in 2005, she started dating – while John kept sending her notes.

At this point, the singer told her that ‘he wanted to have all of me or nothing,’ she wrote in her memoir.

Jessica ‘didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission.’

On his charisma, Jessica said: ‘He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon.’

In her memoir, the mother of three said she met the singer in early 2005 at Clive Davis’ Grammy party.

He came up to her and told her he admired her song With You, which she had written; following their meeting, he began writing her notes.

After secretly dating a few months, she fell in love with his intensity, as she recalled: ‘Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally,’ she wrote in her memoir.

She felt insecure around John because she thought she wasn’t ‘smart enough’ for him: ‘He was so clever and treated conversation like a friendly competition that he had to win.’

Her insecurity was so bad she asked a friend to read over her text messages for spelling and grammar.

However, ‘my anxiety would spike and I would pour another drink. It was the start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves.’

Adding: ‘He loved me in the way that he could and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me.’

In the book, Jessica said he broke up with her via email.

Three years after their split, John did an interview with Playboy magazine, where he said: ‘That girl, for me, is a drug. And drugs aren’t good for you if you do lots of them. Yea, that girl is like crack cocaine to me. Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm. sexual napalm.’

The comments she said were ‘shocking,’ because ‘a woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about.’

Jessica said that she believes that ‘he thought that was what I wanted to be called,’ but instead she was ‘floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that.’

The result of his statements was a breaking of her trust because by saying those things, he was not loyal to her: ‘He was the most loyal person to me on the planet and when I read that he wasn’t, that was it for me. I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away.’

While he eventually publicly apologized, they do not talk anymore: ‘I think he knows a lot of this about me already but he doesn’t know the perspective I have as a woman. That was Jess in her 20s.’

She said that during a session, a therapist suggested that John ‘probably never loved her’ and was just ‘obsessed’ with her.

During an interview with The New York Times, Jessica said she didn’t tell him about the book, but that she doesn’t ‘think he’ll be shocked. He knows these stories.’ 

Jessica is married Eric Johnson in 2014 after dating for four years; they have three children together: daughters Maxwell, seven, and Birdie, one, and son Ace, six.
