Nicholas Godfrey, 18, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder
A teenager has been arrested for offering someone $100,000 to kill one of his teachers on an Instagram.
Nicholas Godfrey, 18, was charged with solicitation of murder after writing on an Instagram page: ‘I need a guy who can kill someone.’
Police have not identified who the teacher was but they say it was a staff member at Fivay High School which is around 40 miles northwest of Tampa, Florida.
It is unclear why Godfrey wanted the teacher dead, or if he has access to $100,000. He was arrested after a student told the school resource officer about the message.
It was traced back to an IP address at Godfrey’s home, where he was taken into custody in front of his shocked parents.
Once in custody, he told cops that he was joking.
They however charged him with first degree conspiracy to commit murder.
‘Quite honestly he has ruined his life by a simple threat on social media,’ one of the detectives who was involved in the investigation said at a press conference on Friday.
According to cops, Godfrey sent three direct messages to a page called ‘fivayfanclub’.
In the first, he said: ‘I need a guy who can kill someone.’
The second read: ‘We have $100,000 for the victim’s head.’
The third said: ‘No joke, I need him eliminated as soon as possible.’
The officers said his parents were ‘surprised’ when they arrived at the teenager’s home to arrest him.
‘Their kid doesn’t get in trouble,’ the detective said.
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said: ‘It wasn’t like this was a bad student, this adult was… did not show somebody who had terrible issues.
‘It doesn’t matter if someone says I was joking – when you do it and you post it out there on social media, you have committed the crime.
‘There is zero tolerance. You want to threaten someone who is part of the school district and just do their job? No. We will hunt you down. The parents were shocked because they had no idea.’
The teenager remains in jail. It is unclear what his bond is.
Godfrey is a student at Fivay High School in Florida. The school resource officer found out about the messages and alerted authorities
