Owner Katsuaki Kiyokawa said the dish was inspired by his mother-in-law after she served him the staple snack made fresh from her kitchen.

The Osaka man saw an opening in the market after he was unimpressed with the onigiri options he found at Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets.

And so he opened up his first store at the Makishi Market in Naha to offer customers the simple pork tamago rice ball – as well as a selection of added-on ingredients.

After a successful opening, the owner rolled out two more stores at the Naha Domestic Airport and the American Village in Chatan.

The optional add-on ingredients include miso, plum, deep fried fish or shrimp, pork cutlet, stir fried carrot, tofu and more
