Iconic DJ Steve Sutherland dies

An award-winning DJ who was credited with pushing the development of Black British music has died.

Steve Sutherland worked on hugely popular shows on Choice FM and Galaxy FM and quickly developed a strong fanbase.

The four time MOBO award winner was celebrated for his tireless work promoting R&B, Hip Hop, and grime artists into the mainstream music scene.

Described by Clash magazine as a “champion for Black British culture” the respected DJ had interviewed the likes of  Janet Jackson,  Alicia Keys, OutKast and Ja Rule during his successful career.

Singer Gemma Fox confirmed his death on twitter, which was followed by a flood of tributes. 

DJ Trevor Nelson posted:” Just heard the sad news of another great loss to British black music. Condolences to the Family of Steve Sutherland who I first met and worked with at the Kensington roof gardens 30 years ago. @TwiceasNiceUK r.i.p”

Wolverhampton born music star Singer Beverley Knight tweeted: “I am so gutted to hear of #SteveSutherland ’s passing. The amount of times he’d get my to leave my house late in the evening to appear on his radio show “it’s gotta be live Bev, no pre-record business!” A BRILLIANT, well loved DJ with an immense legacy. Gutted.”



Trevor Nelson tweeted his condolences to the DJ’s family

 DJ Swerve from Kiss FM posted: “RIP #stevesutherland such sad news that such a nice guy and much loved DJ has passed.”

DJ Colin Francis tweeted “RIP Steve Sutherland!! We travelled all over UK & Europe doing gigs together and you was a DJ whom I respected your determination and desire to push boundaries! Multi MOBO award winner, Mr Twice as Nice and all round good guy!! You will always be remembered.”

Former colleague Becky Earley tweeted: “Devastated to hear about the passing away of #SteveSutherland, he was an absolute legend.

“I really enjoyed working with him at Galaxy, we had a ball every event we did…especially Ibiza and he dropped the best DJ set at my wedding. You will be missed Steve xx”
