Is ‘Independence Day’ on Netflix? Where to Watch the Classic 4th of July Movie

With most theaters closed across the U.S. and studios pushing back release dates for big-budget films like Tenet, Top Gun: Maverick, and Wonder Woman 1984, this Fourth of July weekend will be a quiet one at the box office. While you probably won’t be able to spend the holiday taking in a movie in a darkened theater, you can stream your favorites at home. And what better movie to watch on Independence Day than Independence Day

Independence Day was a major hit after its release on July 3, 1996, eventually racking up a worldwide box office take of more than $817 million. Unfortunately, you won’t find the film — which stars Will Smith as a fighter pilot in the Marine Corps who helps to take down alien ships that plan to attack Earth — on Netflix. It’s also not available to stream with your Hulu or Amazon Prime subscription.

However, you can rent or buy Independence Day on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and YouTube. Or, if you have AMC as part of your TV package, you can watch the movie on the Fourth. An Independence Day marathon kicks off at 1 p.m. ET and goes through 10 p.m. ET.

Two decades after its release, Independence Day got a sequel. Independence Day: Resurgence came out in 2016 and received mixed-to-poor reviews from audiences and critics. Will Smith didn’t return, though Jeff Goldblum was back as scientist David Levinson and Bill Pullman reprised his role as now-former President Thomas Whitmore. Liam Hemsworth also starred.

Independence Day: Resurgence isn’t on Netflix, but you can rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and iTunes. If you get FX as part of your TV package, it’s also available to watch on demand.

You won’t find Independence Day in Netflix’s content library, but there are a few other all-American films you can stream.

The Patriot: Another flick from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, this movie stars Mel Gibson as a colonist swept up in the Revolutionary War. Heath Ledger plays Gibson’s son, who joins the Continental Army to fight the British.

Air Force One: President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) has to defend himself and his family when his plane is hijacked by a group of Russian assassins.

Da Five Bloods: If you’re in the mood for something more serious, cue up Spike Lee’s new film Da Five Bloods. It’s about five Black Vietnam veterans who return to the country decades after the war to find the remains of a fallen comrade (and a stash of buried gold).

Miracle: Most sports are still canceled, but you can relive one of the most famous games of all time by watching Miracle, the 2004 Disney film about the U.S. men’s hockey team’s surprising gold medal win at the 1980 Olympics.
