Jim Davidson sparks outrage over Diversity ‘mugging dance’ comments

Jim Davidson has sparked outrage over a string of comments made in an online rant, including that Diversity should do a dance routine about mugging.

The 66-year-old comedian shared a Youtube video – titled “Who Needs Diversity?” – on Tuesday, in which he also claimed the dance group does not “give a f***” about George Floyd, who died after being restrained by officers in the US earlier this year.

His remarks came in response to Diversity performing a routine inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement on Britain’s Got Talent earlier this month.

The video prompted a chorus of condemnation, with his views described as “archaic” and “racist”.

In this expletive-ridden rant, the former Generation Game host said: “Diversity, what the f*** do you want?

“You just want to be famous don’t you. You want to be all around the world. That’s why you do it, you don’t give a f*** about George [Floyd].”

Davidson went on to say: “You don’t see white couples on adverts anymore, do you? Most TV presenters are non-white.

“The Golden Girls, you know that film The Golden Girls with all them old birds? That’s being made by black people.

“There’s loads of white people sticking up for you, sticking up for Black Lives Matter. Young white girls walking around with banners. Defund the police, support Black People.

“Well, I say most young girls, Gemma’s sister is not holding up a banner as she was violently mugged by three black men. Perhaps Diversity can do a mugging thing.”

The comedian also suggested that the actions of the BAME community are connected to the increase in Covid-19 cases.

He said: “The Asian community who have big families are taking no notice and staying together. They have a bubble of 300 in a f****** house. This is why it is happening in these areas. These areas are predominantly BAME areas.”

The backlash against his comments was immediate and fierce.

Journalist Lorraine King wrote on Twitter: “Archaic, washed-up, unfunny ‘comedian’ complains about black people wanting equality, says too many black people are in adverts and on TV, and rants about black people committing crimes. Jim Davidson is irrelevant so is clearly seeking attention.”

In response to her post, one user wrote: “I think the word you’re looking for (missing) is racist. Jim wants to live in the 70s where he could tell his racist jokes to thunderous applause. He’s always been vile, as are those who support, follow and agree with him.”

Another user said: “Comedian Jim Davidson’s attack in a video I just watched on FB is an utter disgrace. The man is, always has been, and always will be blatantly racist. Shame on him and shame on FB for allowing it on their social media platform!’

In a statement, ITV said: Britain’s Got Talent has always been an inclusive show, which showcases diversity and supports strong storytelling in all forms and ITV stands behind the decision to broadcast Diversity’s performance on BGT.

“Ashley and the group are a great example of the talent, creativity and diversity of modern Britain and their performance was an authentic heartfelt response to many of the issues and. events which have affected society in 2020.”
