Anger has subsided and given way to resigned acceptance.

That’s the view of one town’s business chief, as Ciara brought surging flood waters back to Rossendale week.

Shocking pictures were captured on Sunday of supermarket car parks, main roads, petrol stations and gardens under water, scenes repeated all over the Valley, including Bacup, Rawtenstall, Crawshawbooth, Waterfoot, Helmshore and Ramsbottom.

Mario di Michele, of Mario’s restaurant on Market Street, Bacup said they were left with no power between 2pm and 11.45pm on Sunday, and they were waiting to hear back from their insurers after losing thousands of pounds worth of food and drink.

He added: “There were floods in the fridges and freezers and tables and chairs. This is my third [flood] in five or six years.

“I do have a pump and floodgates but the water came straight back in as there was nowhere for it to go. I’ve had two days in a different world from the one I am used to.

“We had to have a boiler put in straight away because otherwise there would be no heating in the restaurant. At the moment it’s a waiting game.

“It’s just one of those things that happened, the whole town flooded and we’ve just got to get on with it.”
