Letitia Dean lied about her birth to get EastEnders role

EastEnders could have had a completely different Sharon Watts, if not for one very big lie.

For the past 35 years — give or take a dramatic exit here and there — Letitia Dean has been at the centre of some of the most iconic episodes of the BBC One soap as the once and future Vic landlady.

But, it very nearly didn’t happen at all! Dean and fellow EastEnders original Adam Woodyatt were guests on this week’s EastEnders: Secrets of the Square to look back on the entire history of the soap.

Presenter Stacey Dooley’s investigative journalism skills shined when she touched on what it was like for the veteran EastEnders cast members to audition as teenagers back in the ’80s.

“I don’t really remember the audition that much,” Letitia said. “I know there were quite a few recalls. They were looking far and wide.”

One major problem is that Dean didn’t meet the biggest requirement that EastEnders producers were looking for when they were casting the Walford originals.

“We had to be born ‘within the sound of Bow bells’,” she remembered. “And I told a porky!”

In reality, Dean had been born in a cosy cottage in Hertfordshire — a long way from the back alleys of London’s East End.

“I said my parents had to go and work away, and I was staying with somebody in ‘the sound of Bow bells’,” she recalled. “I do remember getting the job and getting the call. I remember that quite clearly. It was just so exciting.”

There you have it — honesty is not always the best policy, after all!

EastEnders: Secrets From The Square continues at 8pm on Monday, July 6 on BBC One.
