Managing editor of conservative site RedState who attacked Fauci works for his public affairs team

The managing editor of conservative website RedState, who published under a pseudonym multiple articles attacking Dr Anthony Fauci, has been revealed as a press officer working for Fauci’s agency.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases confirmed on Monday that William B. Crews had resigned, after his alias was uncovered.

Crews was writing under the name Streiff, and, fervently opposed to COVID-19 guidance on face masks, called his boss an ‘attention-grabbing and media-wh**ing mask Nazi’.

Crews’ identity was first reported by the Daily Beast.

‘NIAID first learned of this matter this morning, and Mr. Crews has informed us of his intention to retire,’ a spokesman told CNN.

‘We have no further comments on this as it is a personnel matter.’

By Monday afternoon Crews had been removed from NIAID’s internal directory.

On the Streiff Twitter account, Crews describes himself as: ‘Managing Editor at RedState.com, Former Infantry officer, CGSC grad, Army staff. Pronouns: F***/You.’

His LinkedIn says that he worked as a press officer for 13 years, from 2007.

Before entering journalism he served in the U.S. army from 1977, serving a total of 15 years including stints in army recruitment and at the Pentagon, until 1992.

The gaps in his resume were unexplained.

Crews studied at Nottaway High School in Virginia, and then, from 1973-77, worked for a history degree at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

In June, Crews wrote a post entitled: ‘Can’t We Just Say It? This Wuhan Panic Was a Fraud Driven by Politics and for the Aggrandizement of Power’.

He described his boss, Fauci, as a ‘professional’, in inverted commas, and attacked the scientists guiding the U.S. coronavirus restrictions.

Crews wrote that the health experts recommending social distancing and mask wearing were ‘militant progressives who loathe America and individual freedom’.

He described the guidelines as ‘a calculated assault upon capitalism and individual freedom that was aided and abetted by members of the federal government who, one can only hope, knew what they were saying was utter bullsh** – I say that because I understand that these people are partisans and, for the most part, militant progressives who loathe America and individual freedom but to think that they actually believed the crap that they were peddling would mean they were incompetent buffoons.’

On September 16 he wrote a post attacking Robert Redfield, director of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), describing him as ‘dangerously incompetent’.

‘Over the past six months, I have become convinced that we are alive today despite the best efforts of Robert Redfield and his anti-civilization goons and, to a lesser extent, an attention-grubbing and media-wh**ing Anthony Fauci,’ Crews wrote.

‘Sometimes I think that if the Russians or Chinese were managing our response to this virus in a way calculated to destroy lives and the US economy, what would they have inflicted upon us that the CDC has not?

‘These people are dangerously incompetent.’

Crews’ last post was on Friday, in response to Joe Biden’s town hall on CNN.

Biden accused Trump of causing needless deaths with his response to COVID-19.

Crews wrote: ‘Factually, it is beyond absurd to say that any action taken by the federal government contributed in any way to a single death.’
