Marsai Martin Just Delivered the Perfect Clapback

Marsai Martin delivered the perfect clapback at Internet trolls who criticized her hair and teeth while presenting at the BET Awards 2020 with a healthy dose of sarcasm — and all wrapped in a call to action.

On June 28, Marsai took to Instagram to share a video addressing the negative comments she received online after presenting an award at the event. Among the comments, Marsai says, are some trolls that made fun of her hair and teeth. Instead of responding in a defensive way, the actor took a different route and made a sarcastic apology video.

“So, I was on Twitter, and a lot of people have been talking about my hair and how it looks like a grandma’s wig,” Marsai said in the clip, holding back fake tears throughout. “And they’re talking about my veneers, and this don’t look like a veneer to me,” she added while removing a retainer from her mouth.

“I’m sorry to anyone I offended or haven’t gotten to your expectations about how I’m supposed to be. I apologize. I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings or have anyone worried about what my decisions are,” she goes on to say in the faux apology video. If the audience couldn’t tell by now that Marsai was joking, she then proceeded to wipe her fake tears with a $100 bill. True legend moves only.

As if the video couldn’t get any better, then, she brought it all back to reality to close it all off. “Y’all, we are in quarantine,” she said, now a serious gaze, “and we’ve got more things to focus on than just my hair: Justice for Breonna Taylor.”

Marsai also addressed the situation on Twitter, writing, “Sorry some of y’all don’t like my hair. Or teeth … which are my actual teeth btw. Good thing I don’t put my effort into trying to please everyone. I like it. Chile I’m 16 this year, let me live. I’m trying to stay sane in quarantine. Enjoy the #BETAwards.”

Celebrities and fans alike shared and commented on the video, including Amber Riley who wrote, “Period sis.” With everything going on in the world these days, nobody has time for petty drama and Marsai certainly knows the way forward!
