BREAKING: All elective surgery except for category one and urgent category two cases will be suspended, Scott Morrison says

Elective surgery will be suspended to free up beds to fight coronavirus, Scott Morrison announced today. 

From midnight tonight, only emergency and very important urgent surgeries will go ahead. 

The measure was agreed by the national cabinet last night. The state and territory leaders will meet again this evening – but no major announcements are expected.

The Prime Minster was speaking to announce he was setting up a new COVID-19 commission, headed by former Fortescue Metals CEO Neville Power.

The commission will help deal with logistics including keeping supermarkets and hospitals supplied.

Mr Morrison said the national cabinet was working very well together and thanked the state and territory leaders for their co-operation.
