Police call in hostage negotiators after active gunman shoots at least one at Louisiana hospital

Police have named the suspect in an active shooting at a Louisiana hospital and warned the public he is ‘armed and dangerous’ and may have fled the scene as SWAT teams search for the gunman inside.

Shreveport Police said they are hunting for 41-year-old Taniel Cole after one man was shot inside St. Mary’s Medical Center in Shreveport early Wednesday morning.

Hostage negotiators and a SWAT team are on the scene searching for the suspect but SPD Spokesperson Cpl. Angie Whilhite said there is a chance he could have already fled the scene.

Whilhite said the suspect has threatened to kill law enforcement and anyone else who ‘tries to stop him’.

She warned the public to stay away from the area and if they see Cole to call 911 and not approach him.

Police were called to reports of a shooting incident soon after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning when a gunman entered the medical center and shot a male victim in the leg.

The victim, who police believe knows the shooter, has non-life threatening injuries.

As of almost 8 a.m. the situation is still ongoing and more than two dozen units are on the scene.

The hospital has not been evacuated.

A local school that backs on to the hospital – Loyola College Prep school – has been closed while authorities work to bring the scene under control.
