Relive Freddie Mercury showing love for Leeds United in Elland Road gig

We are taking a look back at when Freddie Mercury and Queen rocked Elland Road for arguably the stadium’s most memorable gig.

The iconic Mercury, revered as one of the greatest frontmen of all-time, even showed a little Leeds United love by donning a Whites scarf on the night.

A huge crowd packed into Elland Road back on May 29, in 1982, for an epic day of music which was topped by a scintillating live performance from Queen on their Hot Space tour. Others on the bill included Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, The Teardrop Explodes and Heart.

Prior to Queen taking to the stage, the biggest cheer of the day came when the crowd spotted guitarist Brian May watching from the side as Joan Jett performed I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Interestingly, May and his bandmates were due to play at Old Trafford rather than Elland Road but the locals complained about the disruption the massive concert would cause. It moved to Yorkshire with Manchester’s loss certainly turning out to be Leeds’ gain.

Dressed all in white, Mercury and co stomped on to the stage to huge acclaim with opening numbers The Hero and We Will Rock You getting everyone in the mood.

Later in the night, Mercury had stripped out of his leather jacket and was bare-chested – much to the star’s trademark fashion. Musical highlights from the performance included famous hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Under Pressure and We Are The Champions.

The band broke their curfew, but they didn’t care, and so they had to pay a fine for every minute over they were.

Ultimately, the day will be remembered as one of the best non-football days in Elland Road’s history and as another of Queen’s awesome rock ‘n’ roll shows.

Down the years, Elland Road has welcomed some other big musical names for gigs with Sir Rod Stewart, U2 and Happy Mondays performing. Last year, Kasier Chiefs headlined a major day of music at Leeds United’s home to mark the club’s centenary.

Hopefully, in the future we’ll see more big names play summer outdoor gigs at the home of the Whites.
