Russell Crowe explains why release for his new movie Unhinged was brought forward to July

UK cinemas have been closed since mid-March due to the global coronavirus pandemic, but will be starting to open up from July 4.

The Russell Crowe-starring Unhinged is set to be one of the first big Hollywood releases to open in cinemas, and the star has revealed why the release date for the thriller has been brought forward.

“If you think about it, there is going to be a ‘traffic jam’ of all these movies that were being held out,” he said on This Morning.

“You’re looking at half a year of releases or more.

“So Solstice, the studio that made the film is a very young studio – this is actually their first major release – but it’s a studio which is full of lots of experienced people from all over the place and different backgrounds.

“And they looked at the landscape as it existed and as it was unfolding, and they’ve decided to take the risk to go first.

“Somebody’s got to do it,” he added.

Many of this year’s big releases have been pushed back since the pandemic – some into next year – but Crowe added that he thinks people are missing going to the cinema for an escape.

“The funny thing for me is that I’m enjoying the fact it seems so many people are missing going to the movies,” he said.

“And the way I put that is the perverse self-preservation that we humans do, we want to go back to the place where the crazy stuff happens on the screen, not actually in our lives.”

The road rage thriller, which also stars Westworld‘s Jimmi Simpson, sees a man (Crowe) go to extreme and violent lengths to get an apology from a woman (Caren Pistorius) after a traffic dispute.

Unhinged is expected to open on July 31 in the UK and US.
