Saroj Khan dies at age 71 as fans mourn legendary Bollywood choreographer

Saroj Khan, a prominent Bollywood choreographer, has died at the age of 71, her family have confirmed.

The celebrated Indian dancer was reportedly rushed to hospital last Saturday suffering with breathlessness.

Local reports on July 3 have revealed that she died in Mumbai after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

The leading choreographer had tested negative for Covid-19.

A statement released by her family following her death read: “She passed away due to cardiac arrest at around 1:52am at the hospital. She had severe diabetes and related illness, and had tested negative for COVID-19.”

Saroj – also known as Masterji, meaning teacher – had a Bollywood career that spanned over four decades and had influenced over 2,000 songs.



Saroj reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest at age 17

Having previously starred as a backup dancer, her choreography break came with the film Geeta Mera Naam in 1974.

By the 1980s Saroj had become an iconic figure in Hindi cinema and choreographed several routines for Bollywood stars such as Sridevi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.

She received acclaim for her work on the Bollywood movies Mr India, Chandni, Beta, Tezaab and Gulab Gang.

Khan remained a sought after dance choreographer throughout her career and has received several awards for her work.

As well as her choreography, Saroj appeared on a number of Indian television shows as a judge.

In 2012, a documentary honouring the dancer called The Saroj Khan Story was released.

Tributes have poured in for the late Bollywood star

A number of Bollywood performers have taken to social media to share their condolences following news of her death.

“Woke up to the sad news that legendary choreographer #SarojKhan ji is no more. She made dance look easy almost like anybody can dance, a huge loss for the industry. May her soul rest in peace,” wrote Akshay Kumar.

On Friday, her nephew Manish Jagwani revealed that her funeral had been held in Mumbai.

She is survived by her husband and three children, Hamid Khan, Hina Khan and Sukaina Khan.
