Sunderland next manager odds to replace Jack Ross with Gareth Ainsworth and Daniel Stendel in running

Sunderland have begun the search for their new manager after the club announced they had sacked Jack Ross on Tuesday.

Ross had been in charge of the Black Cats since the start of the 2018/19 season and led the club to the League One play-off final where they were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic.

However, after heavily investing in the playing squad over the last 18 months, and with the club sitting sixth in the League One table after 11 games, the board have opted to make a change.

In a statement this afternoon, Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald said: “This is a decision that has been made with a heavy heart. When we arrived at the club 18 months ago, we appointed Jack because we felt that he was the right man to take Sunderland forward over a number of years.

“Jack has worked extremely hard, and has helped us achieve stability at the club, and I sincerely thank him for his efforts. I hope and believe that he will go on to have a successful career in management.”

Jack Ross leaves Sunderland

With their weekend fixture against Fleetwood postponed due to the International break, they won’t take to the field again until October 19.

With that manager search up and running, the bookmakers have released a list of contenders for the Stadium of Light vacancy.

Former Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel was the early favourite after he left Oakwell hours before Ross’ dismissal, while former Sunderland boss Roy Keane is among the contenders, according to the bookies.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Sunderland were never particularly impressive under Jack Ross, and by the end, the Sunderland fan-base firmly turned against him.

“The Black Cats’ squad is undoubtedly good enough to secure promotion to The Championship, but with no shortage of applicants expected, the wrong appointment cannot be made once again.”
