Tom Cruise invites marching band who paid tribute to Top Gun at halftime to screening

Tom Cruise invited a marching band who paid tribute to Top Gun in a halftime show to a screening of Top Gun: Maverick.

Last month, the Ohio State University marching band paid tribute to the film with an epic halftime performance which saw the group recreate iconic moments from the original film on the football field.

But on Tuesday the band were surprised with a personal letter from none other than 59-year-old himself, who invited the Buckeyes to an upcoming screening of the sequel in Columbus, Ohio next month.

‘What a phenomenal performance’: Tom Cruise invited a marching band who paid tribute to Top Gun in a halftime show to a screening of the sequel Top Gun: Maverick

In video posted on Twitter, the band reacted in shock after learning Cruise had written a letter to them gushing about their performance.

The video begins with the students being read the letter aloud – yet the identity of the sender remains a mystery until the very end.

‘While we were on break, we got a very interesting message from apparently a fan of ours who enjoys our work. So I wanted to read this to you, hopefully you enjoy it,’ a man can be seen telling the group.

‘”Dear band, the Top Gun tribute was fantastic. What a phenomenal performance. Thank you so much. I’d love for you all to be my guests for a special screening of Top Gun: Maverick in Columbus this spring. And best of luck to the Ohio State University in the Rose Bowl. Sincerely, Tom Cruise.”‘

Jaws dropped as the students learned who had sent them the letter.

Not only had Tom invited them to a movie screening, but he also sent them boxes of Top Gun Maverick T-shirts.

‘This is cool, I’m really excited,’ one of the band members said.

‘Thank you Tom Cruise!’ another said.

‘Thank you for the amazing Top Gun tribute. And good luck at the Rose Bowl!,’ Tom posted as he re-tweeted the video.

The performance saw the band perform numerous songs from the soundtrack of the film, including Danger Zone, Take My Breath Away, and You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.

Tom played the part of  Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the 1986 film, one of his most famous roles of his career.

Yet apparently he turned down the rule multiple times until he was convinced otherwise.

‘We were turned down by Tom Cruise over and over again,’ super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Extra earlier this year.

It took some unique tricks to finally convince the star to take part in the aviation flick.

‘We arranged with the Blue Angels… to take him up in a jet and he came down, he had a great ride, walked to a pay phone, called me up, and said, “Jerry, I’m in”,’ Bruckheimer said about getting Tom up-close and personal with the pilot lifestyle.

And thank goodness he did as the film would end up grossing over $350M at the box office, winning an Academy Award and solidifying the Mission: Impossible star as one of Hollywood’s biggest leading men.

‘We had no idea the movie was going to be the smash success that it turned out to be… We had a preview in Austin… and I’m telling you, we thought we had the biggest bomb in the world,’ Jerry admitted.

‘Nobody applauded. Nobody made a sound. But when we got the numbers in, it was through the roof. Navy recruitment went up 500% after the first movie,’ he added.

Following numerous postponements, Top Gun: Maverick is slated for release on May 27, 2022.
