Elizabeth Warren says she would start her plan to forgive the $1.6 TRILLION in student loans ‘on day one’ without going to Congress by using president’s executive powers to cancel debt

  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren pledged Tuesday to take a crack at the student debt crisis ‘on day one’ of a potential Warren administration
  • The 2020 hopeful wrote an essay for Medium in which she said she’ll use pre-existing regulations to cut Americans’ debt burdens
  • Last year, Warren rolled out a student debt plan that linked debt relief to individuals’ income

Sen. Elizabeth Warren pledged Tuesday that as president she’d take a crack at the $1.6 trillion in U.S. student loan debt ‘on day one.’

In a Medium post, the 2020 hopeful outlined how she planned to use executive action to start chipping away at the school debt held by 42 million Americans.

In the essay, Warren explained that the Department of Education ‘already has broad legal authority to cancel student debt’ and she would order the Secretary of Education to do so in accordance with the plan she released last year.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren had rolled out a student loan plan last year that linked debt relief to income. She said Tuesday she’d order the Secretary of Education to put it into action

In April 2019, Warren introduced a plan that linked debt relief with income.

Her plan would cancel $50,000 in student debt for every person with a household income under $100,000 per year.

It would also assist Americans with debt whose incomes are between $100,000 and $250,000.

Americans making above $250,000 would get no help with their loans under Warren’s plan.

‘I’ll also direct the Secretary of Education to use every existing authority available to rein in the for-profit college industry, crack down on predatory student lending, and combat the racial disparities in our higher education system,’ she said in her Medium post Tuesday.

Warren has made it a trademark of her campaign to present intricate policy plans to the public.

Until recently, she hasn’t participated in the rough-and-tumble brand of politics commonly associated with President Trump.

But she did tussle with former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg on the December debate state over Buttigieg’s willingness to hold high-dollar fundraisers, calling him out for holding an event in a Napa Valley ‘wine cave.’

And this week it leaked to CNN that during a private meeting with Sen. Bernie Sanders, as they discussed their pursuits of the presidency, Sanders suggested to Warren that a woman couldn’t win against Trump.

Warren confirmed on-the-record Monday night that Sanders made the comment in December 2018. She went on to announce her presidential run on New Year’s Eve.’

‘I thought a woman could win; he disagreed,’ Warren said in the statement.

Sanders and his advisers said her account was false.

‘What I did say that night was Donald Trump is a sexist, a racist, and a liar who would weaponize whatever he could,’ Sanders responded.

Warren and Sanders are among the six Democratic candidates who qualified for Tuesday night’s Democratic debate in Des Moines, Iowa, where the first caucuses in the nation will take place in under three weeks.
