West Brom in advanced talks to sign 10-goal forward on the eve of the new season

West Brom have entered into advanced talks to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney, according to Football Insider.

The Baggies are believed to have moved ahead of Tottenham in the race to land the striker, who bagged 10 Premier League goals last season.

Despite Deeney’s goals, Watford were relegated last season, leading to uncertainty about the striker’s future as he enters the final year of his contract.

The London club had hoped to persuade the 32-year-old to stay amid interest from West Brom and Spurs, as they attempt to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.

However, now it seems Slaven Bilic may have won the battle to land the experienced man, who had been club captain at Vicarage Road.

The report claims the two clubs have made progress in agreeing on terms, and a deal could be completed next week.

Birmingham-born Deeney would leave Watford after 10 years with the club, the lures of continued Premier League football, and the regular match time on offer from Bilic seems to have been enough to convince the striker that the Hawthorns is the right choice.

As the deal moves closer to the finishing line one thing is clear and that is the Baggies won’t have Deeney in their squad in time to face Leicester on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether the powerful frontman will be in the Watford squad as they start their Championship campaign tonight at home to Middlesbrough.
