West Ham vs Newcastle: LIVE updates from the London Stadium

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Newcastle United’s first match of the Premier League season.

The Magpies are at the London Stadium to take on David Moyes’ Hammers in a game that looks too tight to call.

United have handed Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick their debuts, with fellow summer arrivals Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie on the bench.

United’s pre-season was poor, with back-to-back defeats against Middlesbrough and Stoke in the final week of the campaign. But Newcastle’s business this week has sparked some optimism among fans who also saw the takeover take a twist this week.

But it’s all about the match action this evening, with the match moved to 8pm to be televised on Sky.

You can follow all of the action from the London Stadium below:

More from Bruce…

On Andy Carroll: “We all know what Andy Carroll is all about. He looks like he’s somewhere close to being back to where we know he can be. He got his chance tonight, and he deserved his chance, and I’m glad he took it.”

On Callum Wilson: “I tried to take Callum from Coventry years ago and there’s something about him I enjoy watching. He moves well, he’s a goal scorer and works hard for the team. I’m delighted we’ve got him.”

On Jeff Hendrick: “Jeff gave us a nice balance. I’ve been a big admirer of his for a long time and I was delighted at how brave he was to get the assist for Callum. Then he fired one in the top corner – he’ll remember that.”

Bruce on Wilson and new boys

Bruce on Wilson and new signings.

He’ll give us something different but also it makes our squad depth much better. When I’m bringing on Joelinton and Almiron, it can only be a good thing.

I think we’ve made progress. It’s going to be a long, long season and we can’t get carried away but the transfers have made an impact.

It’s nice that the signings have made a difference too.

Steve Bruce reaction

Steve Bruce post-game on Sky:

I wouldn’t say best week but when you come away from home and win in the Premier League and your two new signings win, it helps the cause.

There wasn’t much in it but when you’ve got a striker who has got a typical striker’s goal… I think Callum enjoys plays West Ham.

All round, against a big, tough West Ham team I thought we were worthy winners.
