Angel Gomes is leaving Manchester United after 14 years after deciding not to extend his contract with the club.

Gomes has said his goodbyes to his fellow Manchester United players after turning down a lucrative offer to commit his future to Old Trafford.

Gomes, 19, became United’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards when he replaced Wayne Rooney as a 16-year-old in 2017, but he has grown frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

According to The Athletic, he was thought to be close to signing a new deal but his continued absence from the first-team squad convinced him that his future lies away from Manchester.

Despite the substitutes’ bench increasing from seven to nine since English football’s restart, Gomes has not been named in any of the three match-day squads.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer assured Gomes in negotiations that opportunities would come, but he has only played 291 minutes of first-team football this season.

Solskjaer was never sufficiently impressed by Gomes’ form in the senior squad to give him extended opportunities and the club were wary about sending him out on loan in the final year of his contract.

They feared they would merely be putting him in the shop window.

Solskjaer would also prefer to pick players who have committed their future to the club, hence his hesitance to throw Gomes in.

While he rates Gomes highly, he wasn’t sure he was ready for first-team football – particularly at a time when Champions League qualification hangs so finely in the balance.

He said of his exit: ‘You can ask Angel why he’s not signed.

‘I don’t know what the talks are behind the scenes. Angel’s a top kid.

‘Of course, there are people around him that advise him to do different things. If he doesn’t sign, all the best to Angel and I’m going to follow his career. If he signs for us, let’s kick on.’

Gomes, meanwhile, thinks he’s ready to make the step up and, ultimately, it was the lack of opportunity that saw him consider his future elsewhere.

He has been linked with a move to Chelsea and Barcelona but is not thought to have settled on a new destination as of yet.
