A woman who earned viral fame because of her ‘perfect’ glossy hair has revealed that she only washes it twice, sometimes once a month – and insisted that this is the secret to her beautiful tresses.

Haylee Cunningham, from Florida, stunned her TikTok followers when she admitted that she usually goes 15-30 days in between cleaning her hair.

Haylee, who has red locks that go all the way down to her behind, insisted that the reason her tresses are so long and healthy is because she waits weeks before washing them – a process known as hair training. 

The TikToker, who is not a hairstylist herself but has gained more than 280,000 followers on the platform for sharing various hair tips, explained that when her locks start to get greasy, she ‘refreshes them’ with dry shampoo and oils. As for the smell, she said she covers it up using ‘hair perfume.’

What is hair training and does it actually work?

In a series of now-viral videos – which have gained millions of views – she opened up about the process, and shared some dos and don’ts that she lives by when it comes to taking care of her hair. 

‘When you use dry shampoo, use it at nighttime on your scalp and behind your ears instead of in the morning. It’ll work a lot better,’ Haylee suggested in one of her videos. 

She said it’s also important to find the right tool to brush your hair with – and recommended wide-tooth combs for the job.

She also told her followers not brush their locks when they are wet, to prevent breakage.

She explained: ‘When brushing your hair, get a comb. This does not hold as much oils as a normal brush would.’

When you’re in the shower washing your body, Haylee said it is important to make sure that the steam doesn’t touch your hair.

‘When you get in the shower and you’re not washing your hair, wrap it. I don’t care what you wrap it in: hair towel, regular towel, paper bag,’ she said.

Finally, she added that it’s important you don’t use tight ponytails when putting your hair up.

Instead, she recommended big claw clips or satin scrunchies. She also claimed that cotton pillow cases are bad for your hair, and suggested that people use silk ones instead. 

Although Haylee insisted that not washing her hair has made it much stronger, she admitted that the process does have its downsides – like headaches from the oils and products ‘weighing her down,’ as well as the smell.

When someone asked her if her hair ever gets stinky, she replied in the comment section, ‘Sometimes, but the texture spray I use masks it. And if not, I will use a hair perfume.’

As for her favorite brands, she recommended Moroccan Oil, Living Proof, Kenra, and Olaplex.

‘Inside every follicle on your head is something called the sebaceous gland that secretes out onto your scalp and hair,’ he told Healthline

‘There is this thought process that [sebum is] a natural conditioner, but it’s being produced all the time.

‘So, left to run to its own extent, it will build up and make your hair feel kind of oily. It’s part of the natural physiology of your body, so you can’t really impact that.’
