GRUESOME details have emerged that lay bare the worst botched execution ever.

Angel Nieves Diaz’s execution by lethal injection in a Florida State Prison first appeared to be going terribly wrong when he began grimacing in pain, his eyes bulging and head jutting.

Soon his strapped down body began shuddering as he gasped for air and his skin started turning black from chemical burns.

Ten minutes on, when he should have been dead, he managed to whisper “what is going on?”

Watching the traumatic and gruesome spectacle were witnesses, including journalists, prison staff and a chaplain.

By the 24th minute his body suddenly “jolted” and he opened his eyes widely, sparking panic in the death chamber in Florida’s state prison.

Diaz had always maintained he was innocent after being convicted in 1986 of murdering a manager of a Miama strip club in 1979.

After spending 20 years languishing on death row the 55-year-old was hauled into the execution room of Florida State Prison in Raiford where he gave his last statement.

It said: “The state of Florida is killing an innocent person. The state of Florida is committing a crime, because I am innocent.

“The death penalty is not only a form of vengeance, but also a cowardly act by humans.”

Diaz was then strapped down on a bed called a gurney where three drugs were pumped into his body.

One was intended to dull his pain, a second to paralyse his body and a third to stop his heart in what was claimed to be a painless and humane execution.

By the 34th minute a doctor, who was wearing a mask, rushed in and checked the inmate’s vital signs.

But it was another two minutes before he was pronounced dead  — more than three times longer than it should have done.

An investigation found that the cocktail of drugs had been wrongly injected into his flesh as well in the wrong veins.

This caused chemical burns which turned the skin on his arms black and caused the outer layer to tear, exposing pink and white flesh underneath.

Abnormal swelling in his neck suggested he may have struggled for air the whole time.

The botched execution, forced then-governor Jeb Bush, the brother of then-president George W Bush, to temporarily stop them so Florida’s lethal injection protocol could be reviewed.

Despite this, lethal injections are still carried out in the United States, with 31 states using them.

In August this year Larry Swearingen, 48, declared he could feel the lethal injection “burning” his arm as he was put to death for the rape and murder of a teen.
